We have been delighted to get to know Irene and Pan from The George Pantziarka TP53 Trust over the last couple of years and welcome them to Surbiton Farmers’ Market in 2015 and 2016, both times in the depths of winter! Irene and Pan’s son, George, a much loved local schoolboy, passed away in April 2011, at the age of just 17, from bone cancer. This was the third cancer George had suffered from in his short lifetime and he fought it doggedly for nearly three years. During this time, we was tested for, and diagnosed with, a cancer predisposition syndrome called Li Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS).
Established in 2012 and based in Surbiton, The George Pantziarka TP53 Trust is the only organisation in the UK devoted to supporting people with LFS and related disorders, fostering a sense of community and counteracting the sense of isolation sufferers of this syndrome often feel. The Trust publishes information on their website (www.tp53.co.uk) to help individuals affected and their families understand more about LFS, raises awareness amongst the medical profession and promotes increased access to genetic testing.
Thanks to the generosity of shoppers at Surbiton Farmers’ Market, the Trust has been able to create a lovely new website and also pay for venue hire for their first ever event – LFS UK 2016 – a conference bringing together sufferers, researchers and clinicians. The Trust would like to pass on their heartfelt thanks for your support of their invaluable work.
